Tooling & Mold Fee
STANDARDAlso: mold fee, tooling charge, die fee
A tooling fee is the one-time cost of custom molds or embossing dies, often amortized or waived above a set volume.
A tooling fee is the one-time cost of making the physical molds, dies, or tooling needed for a custom shape, lid, or embossed logo. Standard catalog parts need no new tooling, which is why private label is cheaper and faster.
Tooling is a genuine engineering cost, not a hidden markup: a custom lid mold or an embossing die must be machined, hardened, and tested before a single production unit is made. Tooling lead time also adds directly to your sampling time.
How the fee is treated depends on volume. Many factories will amortize the tooling into the unit price or waive it entirely once you exceed a stated quantity, so the number you see on a first quote is often negotiable against your order size.
The single most important question is not the price but the ownership — who owns the mold, and whether the factory can use it for other customers. That is covered separately in NDA & Mold Ownership.
Practical takeaway: Ask whether tooling is amortized or waived at your volume, and get the ownership clause in writing before you pay.
