BPA-Free

IN DEPTH

Also: BPA free, bisphenol-A free

BPA is bisphenol A, found in polycarbonate; on steel drinkware it only concerns plastic parts like lids and gaskets.

What BPA is

BPA, or bisphenol A, is a chemical building block used in some plastics, most notably polycarbonate. It has drawn attention because it can migrate from plastic into food and drink, especially when the plastic is heated. That migration risk is why BPA has been restricted or phased out for many food-contact applications.

Where BPA actually appears in drinkware

On a stainless-steel bottle, the food-contact surface is steel, and steel contains no BPA. BPA only concerns the plastic parts: lids, gaskets, straws, and spouts. A “BPA-free bottle” claim therefore refers to the plastic components, not the steel body.

The buyer’s real question is not whether the bottle is BPA-free, but whether each plastic part that touches liquid or the mouth is made from an appropriate, tested material.

Myth vs fact“BPA-free” means every part is safe by default — removing BPA does not automatically make substitute plastics risk-free; alternatives like BPS and BPF exist and are still debated.

What to ask for instead

Claim on the box What it actually tells you
BPA-free No BPA in the named plastic, with no detail on substitutes
Food-grade Safe for food contact, but not a specific test result
LFGB / FDA report Documented migration or safety testing on file

The strongest evidence is a per-part material declaration plus LFGB or FDA test reports. That tells you which plastic is used in each component and that it has been tested, rather than asking you to trust a two-word label.

Markets differ in how they enforce this. LFGB is generally stricter than FDA on migration, and California’s Prop 65 adds labeling requirements. Knowing your destination market tells you which reports to collect.

Practical takeaway: Ask for a per-part material declaration plus matching LFGB or FDA reports instead of accepting “BPA-free” as a complete safety claim.
