LFGB

IN DEPTH

Also: Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch, German LFGB

LFGB is the German food-contact law and the strictest commonly cited standard in Europe, testing migration plus odor and taste transfer.

LFGB stands for Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch, the German food and feed code that includes food-contact rules. It is the strictest commonly cited standard in Europe, and many EU buyers and brands ask for it because passing LFGB signals a high bar on material safety. Products that pass are sometimes marketed with a frog mark in the trade.

How it differs from FDA

EU member states base their food-contact rules on EU regulation 1935/2004, with national layers such as LFGB on top. The German layer is stricter than many others in one key way: it tests sensory properties, meaning whether the product transfers odor or taste to food, in addition to chemical migration. Because the sensory test uses human panels or trained assessors, results can vary slightly between laboratories, which is why the standard is set out in detail. For many European brands, an LFGB report is a prerequisite before a product can be listed, and some large retailers will not accept an FDA-only report as a substitute for their EU market.

What an LFGB test covers

A typical LFGB test report includes overall migration, specific-element limits, and sensory testing for odor and taste transfer. The sensory portion is what catches many products; a lid or silicone gasket can pass migration limits but still fail if it imparts a smell or taste. This is why LFGB is considered stricter than a migration-only check.

Myth vs factLFGB is a certificate a product receives once and keeps forever — LFGB is a test against the German rules for a specific material and SKU, and a reformulation or new component needs a new report.

Here is how the two common regimes compare:

Dimension FDA (US) LFGB (Germany/EU)
Basis 21 CFR 170–199 EU 1935/2004 plus German LFGB
Migration Tested Tested
Sensory (odor/taste) Not the primary focus Tested
Common proof Lab test report LFGB test report, frog mark in marketing

Practical takeaway: If your EU market requires LFGB, specify it when ordering and ask for an LFGB test report for your exact SKU, including the sensory results.
