Insulation Performance Test
IN DEPTHAlso: thermal retention test, hot-cold retention test
Insulation performance tests measure heat or cold retention, and results depend on fill temperature, volume, ambient temperature, and lid position.
Insulation performance tests measure how long a bottle keeps liquid hot or cold. Typical marketing claims are holds hot 6–12 hours or keeps cold 24 hours, but those numbers mean little without the test conditions attached.
Why numbers differ between brands
Retention depends on fill temperature (for example, 95°C versus 100°C), fill volume, ambient temperature, and whether the lid is closed or open. A bottle tested with a near-boiling fill and a closed lid in a warm room will post better numbers than one tested with cooler water, a partial fill, or a cold room. Cold retention follows the same logic: a keeps cold 24 hours claim assumes a chilled fill, a closed lid, and a measured ambient temperature, and brands that state only the hours give you no way to verify the comparison.
There is no single universal standard
No single universal standard governs insulation claims, so numbers from different brands are rarely comparable. Honest suppliers state their test conditions alongside the result, such as after 12 hours at 20°C ambient, water dropped from 95°C to 62°C. A bare 12 hours hot claim tells you almost nothing. For your own spec, the practical approach is to define the fill temperature, volume, ambient temperature, lid position, and the required minimum temperature after a stated duration, then have the factory report against that exact protocol.
| Variable | Typical range | Effect on result |
|---|---|---|
| Fill temperature | 90–100°C | Higher start temperature shifts the curve |
| Fill volume | Partial to full | Less mass cools faster |
| Ambient temperature | Room to cold | Colder rooms draw heat faster |
| Lid position | Closed or open | Open lids lose heat much faster |
Practical takeaway: When comparing bottles, ask each supplier for the test conditions behind the claim, not just the headline hours.
