Food-Grade Silicone

STANDARD

Also: silicone, platinum-cured silicone

Heat-tolerant elastomer for seals and straws; platinum-cured is the premium grade and LFGB tests it most strictly.

Food-grade silicone is the standard material for seals, straws, spouts, and grips. It is soft, heat-tolerant, and does not leach the way some plastics can.

Within food-grade silicone, platinum-cured is the premium choice. It has fewer extractables and less odor than peroxide-cured silicone, which is the cheaper alternative.

LFGB tests silicone more strictly than FDA, especially for odor and taste. For European markets, expect to meet LFGB rather than FDA alone.

Silicone hardness is measured in durometer; softer seals compress more easily to close a lid, while firmer grades resist wear longer. Suppliers should quote the cure type and, where relevant, the durometer.

Myth vs factA silicone smell right out of the box means the part is toxic — a fresh silicone odor usually comes from volatile residue that washes out, not a toxicity warning.

Practical takeaway: Ask whether seals and straws are platinum-cured, and request LFGB or FDA test reports for the silicone parts.
