CPSIA
STANDARDAlso: Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act
CPSIA is the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, setting lead and phthalate limits and testing rules for children's products.
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act is a US law governing the safety of consumer products, with specific lead and phthalate limits for children’s products. It applies to kids bottles, sippy cups, and any drinkware marketed to children twelve and under.
The lead limits cover the accessible substrate and surface coatings, while the phthalate limits apply to plasticized components. For children’s products, testing must be done by a CPSC-accepted third-party lab, and the manufacturer issues a Children’s Product Certificate listing the standards and tests.
The certificate is a legal document the importer relies on, and it should name the product, the standards, and the lab. If a product is sold in the US without it, the importer can face recalls or fines.
For general-use adult drinkware, CPSIA still applies to certain substance limits even when the full children’s-product certification does not. A supplier should know which category your product falls into.
Practical takeaway: If your product is a kids bottle or sippy cup, confirm the factory has CPSIA third-party test reports and can provide the Children’s Product Certificate for your SKU.
