Sample Policy & Golden Sample
STANDARDAlso: pre-production sample, approval sample, PPS
A pre-production sample is made on the real production line, and the approved golden sample is the reference both sides keep.
A pre-production sample (PPS) is made on the actual production line with real materials and tooling, before mass production begins. It exists so you approve what the factory will actually build, rather than a hand-made prototype that never survives to the line.
The golden sample is the approved reference that both you and the factory keep. It is the standard every later unit is compared against — by the production team during the run and by any third-party inspector before shipment.
Sample fees and courier fees are usually charged, and most factories will deduct them from the bulk order once you place it. This is not a penalty; it covers the real cost of setting up a line for a small batch.
Never skip the PPS on custom work. An unapproved color, logo position, or lid fit is far cheaper to fix on a sample than on a full container.
Practical takeaway: Always approve a pre-production sample and keep the golden sample yourself, so there is an agreed reference for inspection.
